How Old Can Your German Language Certificate Be? B2/C1 Validity by Federal State (2026)
language-learning 8 min read · English
You passed Goethe or telc a few years ago. Does that certificate still count for the German Approbation? The answer depends entirely on the federal state.
Two different language proofs, do not confuse them
Before you worry about validity, separate the two very different proofs required in the Approbation procedure:
- General language certificate B2 (CEFR): A certificate at B2 level (Goethe, telc, ÖSD or another recognised institute). It is an application document reviewed by the Approbation authority of the federal state.
- Medical language C1 (Fachsprachenpruefung): Proof of medical German at C1 level, provided through the Fachsprachenpruefung (FSP) or, alternatively, FaMed, and assessed by the regional Medical Chamber. The FSP is usually valid for three years.
The age question almost always concerns the general B2 certificate. This is exactly where the states diverge.
B2 certificate validity by federal state
The overview below is based on direct written replies from the individual Approbation authorities (as of 2026). The reference case is a Goethe C1 certificate issued in 2016.
| Federal state (authority) | Max. age of B2 certificate | Old (2016) certificate accepted? | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower Saxony (NiZzA) | no time limit | Yes | B2 required at application; FSP registration handled by NiZzA |
| Rhineland-Palatinate (LSJV) | not applicable | Yes | General certificate not required; only the FSP result counts |
| Bremen | no fixed limit | Case-by-case | An old certificate is reviewed in the mandatory in-person appointment |
| Baden-Wuerttemberg (RP Stuttgart) | no blanket limit | Case-by-case | Assessed on submission in the individual procedure |
| Berlin (LAGeSo) | 3 years | No | "Should not be older than three years" |
| North Rhine-Westphalia (BezReg Muenster, ZAG) | 3 years | No | No B2 certificates older than three years; medical language (C level) via the Medical Chamber |
| Hamburg (Social Affairs Authority) | 3 years | No | FSP via the Hamburg Medical Chamber, registration through the State Examination Office |
| Other states (incl. Bavaria/ZAABY, Thuringia) | confirm directly | Open | No firm written answer on file; confirm with the authority before applying |
Important: these figures reflect how the authorities describe their practice and do not replace a binding decision in your individual case. Before you start a procedure in a specific state, have the rule confirmed for your situation.
"In principle there is no limit; however, a certificate this old would be reviewed in the personal interview." – paraphrased reply from a northern German Approbation authority, 2026.
What to do if your certificate is too old
If your B2 or C1 certificate is older than three years, you have two practical paths:
- Choose a state with a favourable rule: Apply where there is no age limit (e.g. Lower Saxony) or where the general certificate is not required at all (Rhineland-Palatinate). Find the competent authority in our directory of Approbation authorities.
- Re-sit a current B2: A new B2 exam is comparatively cheap and fast and keeps every federal state open. If you are planning a refresher course anyway, this is often the cleanest route.

FAQ
1. Is a Goethe C1 certificate from 2016 still accepted?
It depends on the federal state. Lower Saxony sets no time limit and Rhineland-Palatinate does not require the general language certificate at all. Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg, however, do not accept certificates older than three years. Bremen and Baden-Wuerttemberg assess older certificates on a case-by-case basis.
2. How old can the B2 language certificate be?
The most common rule is: no older than three years. But there is no nationwide standard. Several authorities set no fixed age limit and instead check whether the language skills are still current on a case-by-case basis.
3. What is the difference between the B2 certificate and the Fachsprachenpruefung?
The general B2 certificate (CEFR) is an application document reviewed by the Approbation authority. Medical language at C1 level is proven through the Fachsprachenpruefung (FSP) or FaMed and is assessed by the regional Medical Chamber. The FSP is usually valid for three years.
4. What if my language certificate is too old?
You have two options: apply in a federal state with no age limit (e.g. Lower Saxony) or one where the general certificate is not required (Rhineland-Palatinate), or simply re-sit a current B2 exam.
5. Who checks the language certificate in the Approbation procedure?
The general B2 certificate is checked by the Approbation authority of the respective federal state. The medical language exam is administered by the competent regional Medical Chamber.
